Preserve America Community:
Bowling Green, Kentucky

Bowling Green (population 49,296), the county seat of Warren County, was first settled in the late 1790s and quickly became a commercial and transportation center for south-central Kentucky.

Bowling Green's importance in the region was bolstered by its role in rail transportation, and it is working to preserve its historic Louisville and Nashville Railroad Depot (1926). The building now houses the Bowling Green Public Library's Digital Learning and Access Center, Kentucky's first digital library; Historic RailPark, a non-profit organization that displays and interprets several historic rail cars outside the station; and Operation PRIDE, a community beautification group.

Operation PRIDE has published a Teacher Resource Guide and Elementary School Activity Book. Among the lessons included are those on historic areas, landmark identification and preservation, Warren County Civil War landmarks, prominent area citizens, citizenship, city planning, and government.

Bowling Green has five historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places, including the ShakeRag Historic District, Bowling Green's first district recognized for its significance to African-American history.
