Many Recent Designation Events
There have been many Preserve America Community designation events round the country over the past two months with the assistance of partners in the Preserve America initiative.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Regional Director Bob Young presented certificates and presided at five events, at Sandersville, Georgia on April 2, Oxford, Mississippi on April 19, Walker County, Georgia, and Huntsville, Alabama, on April 20, and Warsaw, Kentucky, on May 16. On April 23, HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary Ana Maria Farias recognized the Preserve America Community of El Paso, Texas at a special event. And on May 1, HUD Deputy Regional Director Patricia Hoban-Moore presented a certificate to Wilkes County, North Carolina at a recognition event in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.Young was joined by Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Chairman John L. Nau, III, at Oxford and Walker County.
Nau also presented certificates to Preserve America Communities Leesburg, Virginia and the recently designated Frederick, Maryland, at the Journey Through Hallowed Ground leadership meeting in Leesburg on April 25. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Warrenton, Virginia, both of which are designated communities within the hallowed ground corridor, also were recognized.
ACHP Expert Member Julia King presented the designation certificate to Calvert County, Maryland, at a Preservation Maryland event on April 25 and also participated on May 1 when the Calvert County Commission met and recognized the designation.
National Park Service Associate Director Jan Matthews, U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, and New Mexico State Historic Preservation Officer Katherine Slick joined Nau to recognize the Preserve America Community of Silver City, New Mexico in a special event at the Silver City Museum on May 4.
ACHP Expert Member Ann Pritzlaff, with U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave and National Park Service Regional Director Mike Snyder, presented designation certificates to Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers counties, Colorado, during the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site dedication ceremony in Eads on April 28.
Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett, Deputy Secretary of Defense (Installations and Environment) Phillip W. Grone, and ACHP Citizen Member Mark A. Sadd presented designation certificates in Columbus, Ohio, to that city’s German Village neighborhood and to city officials from Piqua, Ohio, on May 22.
